Major General Joseph Sweeney

I painted this portrait as my contribution to the comemmoration of the 1916 Easter rising in Dublin, 2016.

Joseph Sweeney was my uncle’s father and I remember meeting him when I was a small child.

My uncle gave me the black and white photo to work from, it apparently was apparently taking around the time of the election. He was elected MP for parliament and took his place in the first Dáil Eireann.

The Sweeney family included it in their archive magazine they produced for the family in 2016.

The Fabriano oil painting paper Tela has an internal and external sizing that offers an ideal absorption for oil colours. It is acid free and archival. The unique paper surface, obtained through a specialized texturing process, creates a surface similar to linen canvas. It is recommended for oil painting techniques.
